Performance meets technology - an integrated evaluation of OBS nodes with FDL buffers

چکیده
In this paper, we show the benefit of an integrated analysis of performance and technology, as both signal degradation and burst losses limit the effective throughput of optical burst switching nodes. The investigation covers the Tune-andSelect (TAS) base architecture as well as extensions with dedicated and shared FDL buffers. First, we describe these node architectures and the OBS reservation scheme considered. Then, we analyze OBS nodes separately from a performance and from a technological/signal degradation point of view. Finally, we present results from the integrated scalability analysis. It is shown that reducing burst loss probability by applying more complex FDL buffers yields smaller maximum throughput due to smaller OBS nodes and in total even a reduced effective throughput under dynamic traffic.

Dimensioning of FDL Buffers for Optical Burst Switching Nodes
Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising candidate for a more dynamic optical layer in the context of IP over WDM. Although buffering is not mandatory for the functionality of OBS, even simple FDL buffers can improve burst loss probability. In this paper, we first discuss principal buffer architectures and reservation schemes for fiber delay line (FDL) buffers. Then, we investigate key desi...
متن کاملImpact of Burst Assembly on the Performance of FDL Buffers in Optical Burst-Switched Networks
Optical burst switching (OBS) is a new approach proposed with the objective of utilizing the huge transmission capacity available with WDM links both efficiently and cost effectively. Burst assembly is one of the main building blocks of this approach, which is performed at the edge of an OBS domain in order to generate bursts whose lengths are much larger than the switching time of all-optical ...
متن کاملNew Fiber Delay Line Usage Strategy in Optical Burst Switching Node
Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a new paradigm for future all-optical networks. In an OBS node, a Fiber Delay Line may be used to delay a burst, effectively increasing its offset time. Traditionally, FDLs were used in contention resolution, i.e. a burst was only buffered if it would otherwise been dropped. We propose a different approach, where delay lines are used also to better arrange burst...
متن کاملBurst rescheduling with wavelength and last-hop FDL reassignment in WDM optical burst switching networks
In this paper, we consider the problem of fast and efficient dynamic scheduling of bursts that belong to different classes of priority in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)based optical burst switching (OBS) networks with limited optical buffers. In OBS networks, control and data components of a burst are sent separately with a time gap to ensure that resources such as wavelengths and fiber...
متن کاملModelling and Performance Evaluation of Optical Burst Switched Node with Deflection Routing and Dynamic Wavelength Allocation
In this paper the effect of dynamic wavelength allocation (DWA) scheme implementation to the OBS node performance is investigated. We have developed the mathematical model of an OBS node in order to evaluate the burst blocking probability. It is proposed to allocate a part of total wavelength capacity to be used by deflected bursts only. The results obtained from the model show that if the numb...
